Free expression is the right to express any opinion I wish, or to equally refrain from expressing any opinion I wish. Seeking to force Macleans to publish is an infringement on speech in itself.

Anyone has the right to any opinion they wish. We all have the right to express that opinion as we see fit. No one has an obligation to provide others with a platform, that being a gross rights infringement in itself.

'The interesting part of the case is that the complainers asked not for an apology or correction — but for the right to reply, unedited, in Maclean's. Maclean's refused. I think this clarifies the stakes on both sides.'

This is precisely not the case, as the magazine has made clear. The complainants were free, as is every other reader to write a letter to the Editor expressing their point of view. The Editor refused them the right to dictate the cover, content (apart from grammatical editing)and so on of the magazine itself; not the Letters page.

This is all well known. Why does our pal distort the truth? Luckily he supplies the reply. It is all in the name of irresponsibility
