Islamic leaders favour “binding legal instrument” to combat “Islamophobia”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon joins US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in bowing low before the Organisation of Islamic Tyrants the Islamic Conference.  Unlike Ms Rice, however, Mr Ban traveled to the OIC meeting in Senegal to deliver his obsequious flattery in person.

The United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) "stand side by side" in forcefully rejecting any linkages between terrorism and Islam and in confronting a raft of other issues, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.

You can “forcefully reject . . . linkages between terrorism and Islam” all you want.  Given that Muslim terrorists proudly and repeatedly proclaim that their murderous activities arise from Islam, however, it will take far more than mere words to disprove “linkages”.

More egregious nonsense emanates from the OIC meeting.  The organisation has received a report calling for legally enforceable restrictions on freedoms of speech and the press.

The recommended steps include a range of responses, including monitoring of and responding to incidents, and a campaign to show Islam to be a "moderate, peaceful and tolerant" religion.

But the report also says that legal measures are required.

"There is a need for a binding legal instrument to fight the menace of Islamophobia in the context of freedom of religion and elimination of religious intolerance," it says.

"The Islamophobes remain free to carry on their assaults due to absence of legal measures necessary for misusing or abusing the right to freedom of expression."

That’s rich.  They insist that Islam is a “tolerant” religion and pay lip service to eliminating religious intolerance but want the power to censor those who “abuse” the right of free expression.  Do they really believe that punishing criticism of Islam will encourage greater tolerance of Islam?  Don’t these people listen to what they’re saying?

Turkish police knew of plan to kill Hrant Dink, but did nothing

Hrant DinkTurkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was shot dead outside his newspaper office in downtown Istanbul in January 2007.  Within days, several persons were arrested and charged with plotting the murder, including Yasin Hayal, the man believed to be the ringleader.

Some shocking information has come to light during their recent trial.

Ramazan Akyürek, the responsible chief of the secret service in the city of Trabzon, warned the police in Istanbul about the threat against Hrant Dink.
. . .
With a letter Ramazan Akyürek requested the police in Istanbul to take measures to prevent a possible attack against Hrant Dink. According to information that was presented during the trial, the Istanbul police chose to not take the warnings seriously and that they did not take any measures.

The police officer Muhittin Zenit, who signed the letter that was sent to the Istanbul police, stated during the trial that they had done everything they could, but that it was the Istanbul police which had not done their job.

The most astonishing statement was made by police officer Muhittin Zenit, who said “We had reported the secret service information further, I tried to persuade Yasin Hayal not to make the attack.“ With that concrete information, the police in Trabzon informed the Istanbul police about the plans of the murder of Hrant Dink. This shows that the police and the murderers also went hand in hand before the murder of Hrant Dink.

The newspaper Hürriyet reports about the information that was brought up in the trial with the headline: “I warned the Istanbul police, but they couldn’t protect Hrant”.

The Istanbul police are pointing a finger at the Trabzon police for failing to protect Hrant Dink from the murder plot.  The Dink family wants members of both police forces charged and put on trial.

Please take our children out of here

Aurukun, AustraliaSocial norms in the remote town of Aurukun, Queensland, Australia, have deteriorated so completely that community elders are pleading for their children to be taken away.  Didn’t the Australian government just apologise for “stealing” aboriginal children?

Several members of Aurukun's community justice group, led by Martha Koowarta, widow of a local land rights hero, are urging outsiders to take children from age nine for their safety and education.

Justice, education and child safety standards in Aurukun, Cape York, have collapsed. Last financial year, 763 defendants — including repeat offenders — from the township of 1000, faced court.

"We need to get the children out of here, especially the girls, because it is not safe," Ms Koowarta said. "Closing the school (in favour of boarding schools) is a good idea, so that when they come back from the city, they can talk and read English as well as Wik Mungkan.
. . . .
Aurukun was the focus of nationwide outrage last year when a judge declined to send three men and six boys to jail for the statutory rape of a 10-year- old girl because she "probably" agreed to sex. The sentences are under appeal.

Aurukun sounds like hell on earth.
