I love this clip. We used this clip in our services to set up a forgiveness message from Roman 3. What I liked was that the dying man was at a point in his life where he wanted the Truth NOW.

As he lay in his hospital bed, this man seeks the truth from the squishy, new age hospital chaplain that cannot give him the truth because she does not know the truth herself. The man asked her how he can find forgiveness, and told her that her new age religion was not helping. She kept saying that she just wanted to comfort him, to which his response was that he didn’t want comfort, he wanted the truth. He wanted to real chaplain who believed in forgiveness and hell…because he needed to know and hear it. He needed answers and wanted someone to look him in the eye and tell him how to find forgiveness.

You can check out my other thoughts on the clip <a href="http://20millionminutes.com/2008/03/10/er-clip-atonement-and-forgiveness/" rel="nofollow">here</a>

What I have learned applies equally to those of us who must continue living and those who must face death. God's forgiveness is certain. Period. The only requirement is that we come before the Lord, acknowledge our failure with the sincere desire and hope not to repeat it. We must feel convicted fully as to our guilt. However, shame and self loathing are not part of God's plan for us. This has prevented me from accepting God's grace. It is by Grace that we are forgiven. This is the "Good News".

Let me add my voice to Joseph's. But I also need to here those words too as sometimes in my doubts, I strain for the clarity of God.

Some years ago retired RC Bishop James Hayes of Halifax reflected that as he sat with people who were dying with cancer, it was not unlike sitting before the Blessed Sacrament. Wisdom to always remember...

When I've had the privilege to minister to the dying, the sure and certain hope of the resurrection through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is pretty much the bottom line.

If there is ever a time a man needs to hear the Gospel, surely it is when facing mortality in an unmistakable and unavoidable way.

Platitudes are of little comfort, either at the bedside, or at the graveside.
