Canada rejects two UN initiatives in one day

Canada stuck its finger in the UN’s eye twice yesterday.  Makes me proud to be a Canadian.

Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier announced that Canada will not attend next year’s UN-sponsored “anti-racism” conference in Durban, South Africa, because it is unlikely to be any better than the 2001 hate-fest.

On the same day, Canada cast the lone dissenting vote against the UN Human Rights Council’s latest one-sided denunciation of Israel.  Thirty countries voted in favour, 15 abstained, one voted “absent”, and Canada voted No.

Canada . . . was the only country to express its full and unwavering opposition to any special session or resolution that did not consider “the responsibilities of all parties,” in particular focusing on “Israeli actions, and not condemning or even mentioning the acts of rocket attacks that deliberately target Israeli civilians.”

Canadian foreign policy: Now under grown-up management.

Clergy bless abortuary as “sacred ground”

Planned Parenthood rounded up a few priests of Moloch to bless an abortion clinic in Schenectady, New York.

To commemorate Tuesday's 35th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a woman's right to an abortion, clergy blessed this city's new Planned Parenthood clinic in a ceremony dubbed "On Sacred Ground."

"Today is more than about the building and about bricks and mortar," Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Linda Scharf said. "It's a blessing to demonstrate the support of the clergy."

Well, they may have found clergy to support baby-killing but, predictably, at least one of them doesn’t know the Bible.

The Rev. Bill Levering, senior pastor of First Reformed Church of Schenectady, said the right to privacy is endowed by God.

"There are some decisions that are left to the individual. Even God respects the right of privacy. We make women into children when we say they cannot control their own bodies," Levering said.

God respects the right of privacy?  I think that cleric is in for a surprise.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Honour killings come to the West

The United Nations estimates that about 5,000 young Muslim women every year are killed by male relatives who believe the woman has shamed the family.  More and more of these so-called “honour killings” are occurring in Western Europe, the United States, and Canada.

Writes Cinnamon Stillwell:

While fathers are commonly responsible for honor killings, they often act in concert with their daughters' brothers, uncles, and even female relatives. For infringements upon a Muslim daughter's "honor" constitute the greatest humiliation possible to the religious and tribal tradition from which many such immigrant families emerged. Acts that demand "punishment" include refusing to wear a hijab (or headscarf), having non-Muslim boyfriends or male friends of any origin, being sexually active, rejecting arranged marriages, aggressively seeking employment and education, and, more than anything else, attempting to assimilate into Western culture.

Two recent cases have shocked North America.  On New Years’ Day, teenage sisters Sarah and Amina Said were shot dead in Lewiston, Texas.  Their father, Egyptian-born Abdel Said, who had abused them for years, complained that they were being corrupted by Western culture.  He has been not been seen since the shooting; police continue their search for him.

A few weeks before, Mississauga teenager Aqsa Pervez was strangled by her father after she refused to wear the hijab.  Like the Said sisters, she had been brutalised by her father.

Unfortunately, CAIR-CAN, like its American counterpart, is part of the problem, not the solution. Working to further acceptance of Sharia (or Islamic) law in the United States and Canada and trying to silence — either through accusations of "Islamophobia," libel lawsuits or boycotts — voices of criticism and reform, CAIR's agenda would seem to be working against the advancement of Muslim women's rights.

Also, feminist lobby groups, which are supposed to be about protecting women’s rights, generally ignore the plight of oppressed Muslim women in our midst.

Former Green candidate blasts May over Afghan mission comment

Mayday LizGreen Party leader Elizabeth May (at right) riled a lot of people yesterday by referring to Canadian and other NATO troops in Afghanistan as “forces from a Christian/Crusader heritage“.  Among those angered was Beverley Woodfield, former Green Party candidate and mother of Pte. Braun Scott Woodfield, who died in Afghanistan in 2005.

Ms Woodfield will not be renewing her party membership.

Former Green party candidate Beverley Woodfield is leaving the fold in disgust.
. . .
She criticized federal party leader Elizabeth May on Wednesday for her comments after the release of a report on Canada’s role in Afghanistan.
. . .
"I fear that with the words (Ms. May) used, that she’s painted a target on the back of every uniformed member of NATO that’s over" in Afghanistan.

The Conservative Party also criticised Mayday Liz for her remark, calling it “extremist” and a “smear [against] the reputation of our soldiers, diplomats and aid workers”.

Ms May promptly fired back, accusing the Conservatives of distorting her views.

“As the Green Party has maintained for some time, the conflict in southern Afghanistan is far more dangerous for our troops when the impression is created that it is a clash of civilizations or, worse, religions,” explained Ms. May.

How bizarre is that.  She is the one who made religion an issue, but now she speaks as if the Conservatives brought it up.

No wonder political science professor Jeff MacLeod says the Green Party must develop party discipline if it hopes to attract good candidates and gain public credibility.

Is Elizabeth May really a member of the Anglican Church of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Committee?
