Following a link from Binky's new blog Free Mark Steyn!, I joined the Facebook group Defend Free Speech in Canada – The Case of Mark Steyn. I immediately saw a shocking report at the group's discussion board.
David Reese from Alabama submitted a comment to the Law Is Cool blog, which has provided a platform to the Muslim law students trying to strong-arm Maclean's magazine. The powers that be at the blog altered his comment—twice—and then banned him.
Mr Reese’s comment was too pointed for their tender sensibilities, so they doctored it. How pathetic is that.
Here is what Mr Reese has to say at Facebook:
Here, http://lawiscool.com/2007/12/22/steyn-fans-spam-law-is-cool/#comments, I wrote,
"A question: given the remarks made by many in Canada's Muslim communities toward homosexuals, when can we expect your complaints to the HRC regarding same?"
My comment was edited to read,
"A question: given the remarks made by many in Canada's Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities toward homosexuals, when can we expect your complaints to the HRC regarding same?"
Later, an unnamed honcho at Law Is Cool responded:
Dave: Complaints of this type are regularly submitted (his post was edited for singling out a single community, whereas the issue is much broader)"
Still later,
And one more update:
My comment NOW reads: "A question: given the remarks made by many in Canada’s [Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities] toward homosexuals, when can we expect your complaints to the HRC regarding same?"
And the eds have edited their own tut-tutting addendum:
"Dave: Complaints of this type are regularly submitted. His post was edited for singling out a single community, whereas the issue is much broader, and parentheses have been entered around the edited text. He has now been banned from this forum indefinitely for continuing to comment on a closed topic. (contact the admin to resolve this if needed)"
Here we have further confirmation of Kathy Shaidle’s observation earlier today: These complainants have no idea what they’re talking about. They claim that their exercise of free speech has been frustrated, but won’t allow a commenter at their blog to say what he wants to say in his own words. When the commenter protests their high-handed and paternalistic attitude, they respond by banning him for, if you can believe it, "continuing to comment on a closed topic".
I agree there are valid reasons for editing comments—e.g., ad hominem attacks, slander—but Mr Reese’s comment was a simple and direct response to the post. Moreover, the blog gives no warning that comments may be summarily altered without notice.
If they will not allow something as trivial as a blog comment to stand as it was submitted, these clowns obviously have no comprehension of what freedom of speech means. They do not know what they are talking about when they prattle on about how Maclean’s violated their right to free speech. They have no credibility whatever.
As I said yesterday, "I shudder to think that these men will ever practice law in Canada".

Please do not confuse the complainants with this site. The overlap exists with one individual only.
Mr. Reese’s comments have been documented, as have the correspondences with him. We were very clear about the intent and purpose, and will be able to provide this as needed.
This individual also engaged in repeated posting behaviour of inappropriate content that necessitated banning him from the forum.
men… and women… if you please.
Statguy,
More here, http://eteraz.wordpress.com/2007/12/17/will-canadian-muslims-drop-complaint-now/#comment-116796, including this gem:
“Reese’s comments are on file, as is his correspondence with our team members.
He is very well aware that the edits were done to avoid any semblance of racism.
If required, such documentation can and will be provided.”
If they’re assembling a dossier, it would behoove me to provide a suitably fetching photo.
lawiscool (#1), According to Mr Reese, you banned him after he posted several comments elsewhere on your blog—only after you altered his original comment without his knowledge or consent.
Again, so much for “freedom of speech”.
Also, if Law Is Cool would identify by name the writers responsible for each post, there would be no confusion between your blog and the complainants. We don’t even know who wrote comments # 1 and 2 here.
LawIsCool,
I repeatedly posted the same two comments responding to your altering of my original comment. As you altered my comment and closed comments, such that no rebuttal was possible, I posted my responses under non-germane posts.
Given the scurrilous nature of your conduct, my responses were hardly inappropriate in their substance. They were only inappropriate in that they were appended to non-germane posts.
It is ironic that you insist upon editorial control of your own site, but support a campaign to strip a privately-owned publication of control over its own content.
Finally, why the alias? Have the nerve to own up under your real name.
This almost seems comical; none of you actually address the substantive content of the blog in question.
And looking at the other posts on this blog and the others in his fan base, the contents are as bad and at times worse than Steyn’s.
You guys are a bunch of scary people down there in the U.S. Keep your notions of freedom on that side of the border, we don’t want it.
I’ve managed to locate the “inappropriate content” I left at lawiscool.com. Here it is, in all its scandalizing, ban-him-before-he-gets-us-sued glory:
In my comment to one of your posts, I wrote the following:
“A question: given the remarks made by many in Canada’s Muslim communities toward homosexuals, when can we expect your complaints to the HRC regarding same?”
Without my consent, you edited my comment to read:
“A question: given the remarks made by many in Canada’s Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities toward homosexuals, when can we expect your complaints to the HRC regarding same?”
This is dishonesty of the first order. You are a liar.

You respond here (http://lawiscool.com/2007/12/22/steyn-fans-spam-law-is-cool/#comments) that my post was edited “for singling out a single community, when the issue is much broader than that.”
First, I don’t accept your premise.
Second, you have no right to put words in my mouth to advance your premise and dilute mine.
This is dishonest.

Canadian dude (#6), Your claim to have examined the contents of my blog lacks credibility because you missed some crucial information posted at the top of the left sidebar: my place of residence. It’s in Canada. If you disagree with some of my posts, leave comments. Without that, your criticisms likewise lack credibility.
This is one Canadian who does most certainly want freedom, as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Check out Article 2:

It seems a waste of effort to dispute matters of freedom of speech with these men. They’ve asked for other men’s money and goods and they’ve asked for control over what other men say. It seems more to the point to say to them whatever it is one says to thieves and tyrants.
