The Most Rev Terry BuckleThe Most Rev Terrence O. Buckle has announced his intention to retire in December 2008.  Archbishop Terry has spent more than thirty years ministering to the peoples of northern Canada.  He served as priest at Inuvik, NWT, archdeacon at Fort Nelson, BC, and rector and canon at Yellowknife.  He was chosen Bishop of Yukon in 1995 and Metropolitan (provincial archbishop) of BC and Yukon in 2005.

Archbishop Buckle identified finding resources and strengthening the ministry to the youth as Yukon’s continuing challenges.

“The financial challenge will always be there. We need more clergy. We need more trained clergy to train others,” he said. Twenty years ago, he said, the diocese – which has 15 congregations serving 24 communities in the Yukon and parts of northern British Columbia – employed 14 priests. Now it has five.

Abp Terry also serves as chaplain to the Zacchaeus Fellowship, a group of Christian believers who have struggled with same-sex attraction.  (Zacchaeus Fellowship started as a group of Canadian Anglicans, but its membership is now international and trans-denominational.)

Yukon Anglicans will very sad to see Abp Terry retire.  He is a wise, humble, and inspiring Christian leader with compassion for all.  He also has a great sense of humour.

I have heard him preach at Christ Church Cathedral, Whitehorse, many times, and he always brings a timely and biblically grounded message.  From his sermons, it is abundantly clear that his greatest passion is mission—the mission of the church and mission in the lives of individual Christians.

His most recent Bishop’s message is posted here.

He and his wife Blanche plan to retire in Whitehorse.
