The Canadian Human Rights Commission has been sicked on Free Dominion. One Marie-Line Gentes, claiming she was offended by comments posted at the conservative web forum, has launched a complaint alleging "hate speech" under Section 13 of the Human Rights Act. These are the allegedly offensive statements:
"I can't figure out why the homosexuals I ran into are on the side of the Muslims. After all, Muslims who practice Sharia law tend to advocate beheading homosexuals." [posted 24 April 2006]
"I defy Islamic censorship and speak about what I believe is the truth about violent Islamism and its threat to religious liberty in Canada." [posted 3 September 2006]
The first statement seems to me trivially obvious; the second is confrontational but, I think, justifiable.
Ms Gentes is not a Muslim, but she maintains that reading those statements made her feel discriminated against. Just a bit of a stretch there. I'd like to know on what basis the CHRC granted her standing to instigate her complaint. Apparently, one can launch a human rights complaint even if one's rights haven't actually been impinged.
Was Ms Gentes unable to muster the intellectual resources needed to argue against those "offensive" comments? Far easier to use the government to shut down the website.
The text of the CHRC letter is posted here and background information is posted here.
