Prominent British scientist Brian Cox disagrees with Richard Dawkins’s claim that science disproves the existence of God. Dr Brian Cox of the University of Manchester’s Particle Physics Group had this to say yesterday while speaking at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
Despite his scientific beliefs, he says it is impossible to rule out the existence of a greater being, and he admires people with strong religious beliefs.
He said: "Scientists should be able to draw a line between things we do and don't know - they should be comfortable in doing that. We can't rule anything out as being impossible, including the existence of God or a greater being.
Dr Cox seems to think that there is only one way of interpreting the opening chapters of Genesis. Many Christians, myself included, believe that the Bible does not present a fixed timeline for creation, however.
"It has been proven without question that the world was created more than 12,000 years ago, contrary to what is written in the Bible. That doesn't mean there isn't a possibility God was in existence at the time of the Big Bang, however.
As the old question puts it, “Who banged the Big Bang?”
"I respect people who have strong religious beliefs because, like scientists, they also have a great interest in the world."
Richard Dawkins will not be pleased to hear that, especially from a Royal Society University Research Fellow.
While working on his doctorate, Brian Cox played keyboards for the 1990s pop group D:Ream. He is also the inspiration for the main character in the new film Sunshine.
