Pediatricians concerned about homosexual parenting

The American College of Pediatricians (ACP) has expressed grave doubts about homosexual parenting.  A trend in favour of accepting homosexuals as adoptive or foster parents has recently developed, in opposition to received wisdom and accepted practice of only a few years ago.  The scientific basis for this trend is sparse, controversial, and of very recent origin—and contrary to the well-supported finding that children tend to fare best when raised in stable households headed by married biological parents.

The ACP article outlines the scientific issues impinging on accepting homosexuals as parents on the same basis as heterosexuals.

Data on long-term outcomes for children placed in homosexual households are very limited and the available evidence reveals grave concerns. Those current studies that appear to indicate neutral to favorable results from homosexual parenting have critical flaws such as non-longitudinal design, inadequate sample size, biased sample selection, lack of proper controls, and failure to account for confounding variables.  Childrearing studies have consistently indicated that children are more likely to thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically in a home with two heterosexual parents versus a home with a single parent.  Therefore, the burden is on the proponents of homosexual parenting to prove that moving further away from the heterosexual parenting model is appropriate and safe for children.  [footnotes omitted]

Scientific research on the effect on children of being raised by homosexuals is simply too limited for pediatricians and other relevant experts to sign on to the current trend, which is driven far more by political agendas than by empirical evidence.  The best science available at the present time indicates that it is inappropriate to permit homosexuals to become adoptive or foster parents.

Albertans buying body parts in China: David Kilgour

Former Edmonton Liberal MP David Kilgour charges that wealthy Albertans are traveling to China to buy body organs harvested from executed members of the banned Falun Gong movement.  He calls this a crime against humanity and he wants it stopped.

"There's no doubt people are going from Edmonton and Calgary to China to get new kidneys or new livers," Kilgour told the [Calgary] Sun yesterday.

He said many of the organs sell for up to $70,000.

"Only foreigners in places like Alberta can afford to pay for them."

Kilgour, former secretary of state for the Asia-Pacific region, says he has travelled to more than 30 countries while investigating allegations that an underground network of Chinese surgeons, nurses and hospital administration staff are harvesting organs for sale.

Together with Winnipeg human rights lawyer David Matas, Mr Kilgour has written a report on Chinese trafficking in body parts.  A revised and updated version of the report is due to be released next week which, he says, will present more evidence that the trade still continues.

Canada has no policy on face veils, but Hérouxville does

Debate is raging in Europe over wearing the niqab (full face veil) in public, but Canada has no policy on the issue.

The controversy in Europe over face veils worn by Muslim women could spread to other countries, but Canada's immigration ministry has "no clear departmental policy" on the issue, warns a confidential briefing note prepared for former Citizenship and Immigration Minister Monte Solberg. The note cautions the department's guidelines for passport photographs, which require that facial features be visible, "have implications for the removal of face veils.".

What might those "implications" be, exactly?

Now that the minister has been warned, how long do you think it’ll be before we have a policy?  (Don’t hold your breath.)

Canada may not have a policy, but the village of Hérouxville (population 1300), Québec, does.  The municipality has formally outlawed stoning of women, female genital mutilation, and walking through the streets with full face coverings.

André Drouin, a municipal counselor in Hérouxville, told La Presse, a document detailing the bans and the cultural norms of the local population was adopted in light of the stormy debate over the “reasonable accomodation” of religious and cultural minorities that has been raging in Quebec media over the last few months and has principally focussed on Montreal’s small ultra-orthodox Jewish community.
. . .
Along with the bans, the Hérouxville document states that Christmas trees are a Quebec tradition, that swimming pools are mixed, and that pork meat and beef are displayed on the same shelves. Asked whether he fears being labeled a racist, Drouin answers: “We are not racists, we are explaining our culture".

The Hérouxville document of bans and “norms” was sent to the Ministries of Immigration of Canada and Quebec.

The La Presse is report is posted here in French.

Hérouxville is located north of Trois-Rivières, near Shawinigan and Grand-Mère.  (Map here.)  The motto on the town flag is “Carpe diem”.  Indeed.
