It's time we start thinking about how to create a happy existence for ourselves, with less of us around in Canada. I am 31 years old, and none of my friends my age currently have more than two children. Most have none. Nobody talks about having more than two. All that you're describing resonates with my experience. However, I don't see it as a "sobering message". What's sobering is that every day, the world adds the equivalent of another Regina, SK to the population. The poorest of the poor in developing countries are more than compensating for my landlocked sperm. If there's an "implosion" in population here, there's twenty "explosions" there. And guess what, all of them want to climb the socio-economic rungs out of poverty into a middle-class existence. While all of them cannot, many who come here will. In the book "Your Money or Your Life", Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robins talk about deciding what is enough to have a satisfying lifestyle. How do you know when you've earned enough? This is a family exercise anyone can do. The concept of the "average Canadian" is essentially meaningless because it causes a false dialogue. Is the average Canadian happy? If I'm below the average, do I need to earn more? I think we need to get to a new way of understanding wealth and poverty, one where winners and losers are not measured by their net worth and a nation's potential is not measured by its ability to grow its population.
