Clarkson guilty of homophobia for calling car “gay”

The politically incorrect automotive critic Jeremy Clarkson has finally gone too far.  He called a car “a bit gay”, and someone complained on behalf of the offended motor vehicle.  The BBC has found for the car.

The BBC has upheld a complaint against Jeremy Clarkson, the Top Gear presenter, after he described a car as a "bit gay".

The ruling is a surprise since the corporation had defended Clarkson robustly when the remarks were broadcast in the summer.

He provoked the ire of the gay community when he asked a member of the show's audience if he would buy a two-seater Daihatsu Copen, retailing at £13,495. The man said, "No, it's a bit gay", to which Clarkson added: "A bit gay, yes, very ginger beer."

Clarkson has a well-known and -deserved reputation for skewering sacred cows, as the BBC itself has noted on Top Gear’s website, but ridiculing a car for its alleged sexual orientation—well, that is beyond the pale.

Fraser Steel, the head of editorial complaints at the corporation, took offence and has upheld the complaint — thought to be the first in broadcasting about homophobia and a motor car.

In his ruling, Mr Steel said: "Clarkson supplemented the term 'gay' with a phrase which is rhyming slang for 'queer'. There was no doubt that it was being used in the sense of 'homosexual' and was capable of giving offence."

“Capable of giving offence” to whom, exactly, and on what grounds?  Seriously, what sane human being, homosexual or otherwise, could be offended by someone calling a car “gay”?

Has Mr Steel forgotten the ridicule Thames Valley Police brought down upon their heads for arresting an Oxford student after he said a policeman’s horse was gay?

That sort of nonsense will only encourage Mr Clarkson.  I can’t wait!

In the meantime, the Copen’s website is here.  Judge for yourself whether “gay” is a fair description.

Iraqi Muslims persecute Assyrian Christians

Assyrian Christians, also known as Syriacs or Chaldeans, are being forced to flee Iraq to escape religious persecution by Muslims.  The ancestral home of the Chaldeans is located in Nineveh Plain in northern Iraq, now controlled by Kurdish Muslims.

Pascale Warda, former Iraqi minister of displacement and migration, said in October that the country's Assyrian Christians—also known as Chaldeans—are being targeted by hard-line Sunni and Shiite Muslims. In addition, Kurds are seizing land owned by some Assyrian Christians. They then deny the Assyrians access to water, according to the Iraq Sustainable Democracy Project, which focuses on issues affecting Iraq's minorities.

"This is a dark phase for us," said Warda, an Assyrian Christian. "The situation is turning more and more [violent]."

Kurdish militia and Iraqi police have publicly assaulted Assyrian Christians.

The precarious position of the Assyrian Christian community of Iraq has been brought to the attention of the US government.

Julia Sorisho Rodgers of Christians for Assyrians of Iraq said among the atrocities are the bombing of more than 15 churches, the kidnapping and murder of 13 Assyrian women in Baghdad in August, and the beheading of a priest in Mosul in October.

"A lot of people in Washington don't know who the Assyrians are," said Rodgers, who organized a Dec. 4 rally outside the White House to protest the treatment of Assyrians, who include Christians, Catholics and Orthodox Church members.
. . .
[T]he U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has urged granting refugee status to these persecuted believers.

In November, the USCIRF wrote to Paula Dobriansky, under secretary of state for democracy and global affairs, urging her to expand refugee options for the ChaldoAssyrian and Sabean Mandean communities.

Assyrians have lived in present-day northern Iraq since Old Testament times, and embraced Christianity during the first three centuries AD.  Assyrian Christians still speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.

Santa Claus loves Vladimir Putin

Nashi demonstrators dressed in Santa suitsMore than 70,000 young Russians dressed in red Santa-like suits demonstrated in central Moscow yesterday to show their support for the government of President Vladimir Putin.  The mostly teenage members of the pro-Kremlin youth movement Nashi (Ours) gathered en masse to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Moscow, where the armed forces of the USSR defeated the Nazis.

Pro-democracy Russians view Nashi as a menacing hangover from the days of Communist totalitarianism.

[A]ccording to Russia's dwindling band of liberal democrats, scenes like this are less a display of benevolence than a show of force. For them, Nashi, the Kremlin-backed youth group behind yesterday's parade of colourful Santas, is an alarming throw back to the Soviet era.

As the youngsters swayed to the "patriotic karaoke" emanating from the stage, a voice boomed out the loudspeakers exhorting them to reinvent Russia's lost glory.

"Let the miracle happen," the voice cried out. "Let heart reach out to heart so our country can rise once more."

Nashi came into being in 2004 after a pro-Russian government in Ukraine was swept from office by the Orange Revolution, causing consternation among Kremlin leaders.  Putin then ordered the creation of a large-scale youth movement apparently modeled on the Communist Party’s youth organisation, the Komsomol.  Nashi’s red flag recalls Soviet glory days.

The youth organisation is said to have instigated assaults on opposition politicians as well as a campaign of harassment against Britain’s ambassador to Russia Anthony Brenton.  The depth of its young members’ commitment to Nashi’s ideological rhetoric remains to be seen, however.

Release of Caledonia “political prisoner” demanded

About 30 demonstrators gathered outside the office of Ontario's attorney-general to demand the release of a Six Nations man arrested for assault last summer at the illegal occupation at Caledonia.  The group claims the man is a political prisoner.

A Six Nations protester arrested during the ongoing aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont., is a “political prisoner” who remains in jail to deter other aboriginals from standing up for their land rights, demonstrators protesting his incarceration said Monday.

A group of about 30 protesters demonstrated outside the attorney general's office in Toronto to demand the release of Trevor Miller. The 31-year-old was jailed in August, accused of assaulting two members of a television crew near the occupied former housing development site in Caledonia.

But to protester Pat Houlley, Miller is an aboriginal who was standing up for his community.

“He was doing what any Mohawk man should do in this circumstance,” said Mr. Houlley, who came from Six Nations in New York state. “When a Mohawk man was called to protect the women and children and the territory, he answered that call.”

That guy's an American!  And the Six Nations complain about outsiders interfering in their affairs.

Anyway, Mr Miller was arrested for assaulting a television crew.  What does that have to do with "standing up for his community"?  Were the cameramen posing some kind of danger to alleged Six Nations territory?  No, they were merely filming the occupiers threatening residents and shaking down passers-by.

How does attacking journalists who are recording evidence that Six Nations occupiers committed extortion and theft "protect the women and children and the territory"?

Meanwhile, last weekend vandals wrecked a Caledonia house.

About 1:30 a.m. yesterday, the owners of the home returned to find furniture upended, mirrors smashed and the walls spray painted with hate messages. They saw intruders flee out the back door, said Constable Paula Wright.

More courageous protection of women and children?
