Stand up for Christianity and Christmas

The present Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, and his predecessor, Lord Carey, have both spoken in defence of Christianity and Christmas against political correctness and consumerism.

In what appeared to be a co-ordinated pre-Christmas offensive, Dr Rowan Williams and Lord Carey mounted a stout defence of Christianity's place in society.

Abp Williams attacked "silly bureaucrats" who insist on banning Christmas symbols in a "wrong-headed" attempt to avoid offending those of other religious faiths. Lord Carey maintained that Christianity is an integral aspect of British identity.

"If you take the Christian faith out of British identity, what have you got left?

"That's not to say you can't be British and a Jew, or British and a Muslim. Of course I'm not saying that. But we are talking about a British identity. The majority of people in this land identify themselves by a common language, by common culture and by the implicitness of the Christian faith itself. It's a very important part of our identity."

The Fourth Sunday in Advent

The collect for today, the 4th Sunday in Advent, from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer:

O Lord, raise up (we pray thee) thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through the satisfaction of thy Son our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be honour and glory, world without end. Amen.
