The FAD-Driven Church

Dr. Yeraslav Penguin, Saint John Chrysostom Professor of Liturgical Historics at St Toucan's Orthodox Seminary and Roadside Icon Shoppe reviews The FAD-Driven Church, a new book on post-post-modern ecclesiology:

First off I have to explain that by "FAD" the author, Father Philen Restless, is referring to the acronym F.A.D. which stands for Frequent Alteration of Direction. "Stagnation is the number one enemy of packing those pews," says Fr Philen in the 40-page introduction . . .

"Worshippers in the 21st Century have the attention span of demented gnats," Fr Philen goes on to say. "To grab their attention week after week, month after month, year after year, and so forth, the wise worship director . . . will keep their parish guessing. Attendance starting to wane? Throw in some liturgical dance. Worshippers sick of liturgical dance? Why not some liturgical drama? Clowns on stilts! Jugglers on unicycles! Bible readings given by Morse code on African drums! Keep 'em guessing! If they never know what to expect at any given service, they will show up just to see what's coming next!"

Dr Penguin gives the book two thumbs down ("because I only have two thumbs"). I can't imagine why.

Read the whole thing. I saw this at The Onion Dome, a humour site with an Orthodox twist.
