Muslim NZ MP says stoning OK—but not here

Ashraf Choudhary, Labour MP in New Zealand and the sole Muslim in the NZ Parliament, was asked on NZ television if he thought the Koran was wrong to allow homosexuals and adulterers to be stoned in some circumstances. Perhaps he thought his answer was a wise equivocation, but I doubt that many New Zealanders were comforted by his response: "No, no. Certainly what the Koran says is correct. He added, In those societies, not here in New Zealand."

Who decides which societies are "those" ones?

A good question

At least two Catholic NDP MPs have been disciplined by their church for voting in favour of same-sex marriage. But Ted Byfield asks a good question: Why have no Liberal MPs been sanctioned?

The crucial question is this: if merely voting in favour of the bill gets Timmins MP Charlie Angus kicked out, what ought to happen to the man who sponsored the bill, ordered his cabinet to ignore any qualms of conscience and vote for it, then stifled the debate and rammed it through the House so that it could not become a central issue in the next election?

And further:

Does the Church have one rule for MPs and another for cabinet ministers, one for Liberals and another for NDP members? What's going on?

The Roman Catholic Church in Canada has left itself open to a charge of putting politics before faith—the same charge the church brought against the two NDPers.
